Over the last few days, I was thinking over my sharing the experiences I’ve had with people who were actively dying (they saw and had conversation with loved ones, etc.). Dr. Charme asked what I thought about that, and I said I believed them. To expound on that a little more, I believe that part of actively dying involves a sort of mental cleansing; taking “psychological stock” in your life…For instance, when my grandmother was dying, she was “visited” by her husband (who had died in 1994) and she also spent time reconciling her life (perhaps this is what happens when “life flashes before your eyes”) — it seems she was putting her things in order — in her mind — before passing, and I believe that was her way of comforting herself and accepting the realization that she was about to die. I believe that to be the case with each of the experiences I’ve had, in large part due to the subject matter of conversations these people had with their “invisible visitor.” In further thinking about it, especially in the case of my grandmother, perhaps I accepted these “conversations” and “stock-taking” as a way to find my own comfort and peace with her death.
